While the world outside the church is ablaze with holiday fervor, the church pauses at Advent to reflect on our broken reality. For it is only by embracing the somberness of Advent that the lights of Christmas are truly authentic. Advent ends at Christmas when all the candles around the wreath are lit, but it begins when the candles are unlit. “Advent begins in the dark”.
